Take a “Sense”ational Nature Walk

As the weather warms up in the summer months, this is a great time to head outdoors with your children to inspire a love and appreciation for the natural world.

As we know, being outside and connecting with nature is invigorating and will stimulate your child’s senses.  Children are innate scientists and love to experience the sights, scents, sounds, and textures of the outdoors.  There are countless opportunities for discovery, creativity and problem-solving.

If you are looking for ways to engage the senses while having fun outdoors, try taking a nature walk! A nature walk can be anywhere…the beach, a forest, a field or even down the street in your neighborhood.  Bring a bag to collect your treasures and spend time discussing with your children what you saw, smelled and heard.

Here are some fun ideas for nature walks with your family:

Listening Walks

As you walk ask your children what they hear and identify the sound.  It may be the birds singing, the wind blowing, or the lawnmower mowing. You may want to take pictures so that you can review later.

Color Walk

Make a list of colors to find on your walk. List them, collect them or take pictures of them.

Opposites Walk

Make a list of opposites as you walk.  You may feel something that is wet - ask your child the opposite. (soft/hard, smooth/rough, tall/short).

Bingo Nature Walk

Make a simple bingo card and in each square draw a picture of something you want your child to find.  When you find it, have your child circle it.

So turn off the electronics and turn on the senses to enjoy feeling the warmth of the sun, the sound of birds singing and the sight of flowers blooming!
